Located in the heart of Marina Baixa, Benidorm is a city with a Mediterranean soul. It has 300+ sunny days a year, kilometre-long urban beaches and crystal clear waters. Locals call Benidorm the “Skyscraper City,” elevating it to the same level as other world-renowned cityscapes and skylines, like New York and Hong Kong.
Traditionally, Benidorm has been a city populated by fishermen and their families. Take a walk through its Old Town and discover the vestiges of the town’s seafaring past, like Calle Mayor, Plaza de Canalejas or the castle, all of which have a charming cultural legacy. In Plaza del Castillo, there’s a spectacular viewpoint that shouldn’t be missed. (It’s called the “terrace of the Mediterranean” because it offers unbeatable views of Benidorm’s coast.)
In Plaza de San Jaime, you’ll find the 13th-century Iglesia de San Jaime Apóstol y Santa Ana, which, through its blue domes, offers a view of the chapel of the Virgen del Sufragio, patron saint of Benidorm. Here, the town hall building is one of the most modern buildings in the city—it’s even considered a horizontal skyscraper. Its standout windows attract many travelers, as they are decorated with the first and last names of Benidorm’s most iconic citizens.
After you see the entire city, lose yourself in its wonderful beaches. In the northern part of the city, there are two small coves of sand and rock, Cala del Tío Ximo and Cala Almadrava, which scuba divers love for their tranquility and solitude.
Separated from each other by a popular promenade, the Levante and Poniente beaches are known for their wide range of services and restaurants. These are accessible beaches with something for any type of traveller. The Old Town, located between both beaches, is home to Cala de Mal Pas, a small site known for its charm and incomparable beauty. In front of it, the Benidorm Island is paradise for scuba divers and those who love to be out on the water.
Of course, you can’t visit Benidorm without trying its delicious cuisine. Unique rice dishes, cocas and sweets made from the best of both the sea and land are the norm here, giving rise to a different kind of gastronomy that represents the essence of the Mediterranean.
We are not surprised that travellers, adventurers, families, couples and friends alike love Benidorm for its charm, beauty and range of activities. The only problem travellers have when they visit is figuring out what they’re going to do first!
